Mousing over the text on our self registration confirmation screen was resulting in it becoming underlined, bolded, and slightly larger.
There was a tiny malformed html tag causing the problem, and we've had some stern words with it. In future it will behave itself.

Google Analytics
Last month an Austrian computer science professor, Hermann Maurer, raised his concerns about the volume of information being passed to Google as a result of the widespread use of its free Google Analytics analysis package. The NZ Herald article is here.
Professor Maurer's concerns represent the "informational purist" end of the spectrum. eLgar uses Google Analytics to provide traffic data for the OPAC and has proved a valuable tool in our work in that area.
The benefits certainly outweigh the possible risk for us, we aren't running analytics to enhance our position on search lists as many organisations do. We don't use the Google adwords and campaign functionality of analytics, we are using it to track traffic and search terms in order to better understand out customers' behaviours and improve our service.
My "official" answer would be: Using Google for this service, as it's free, is a prudent use of ratepayers money given the cost of the alternatives which are no more accurate.

And So It’s Goodnight From Him...
This Friday (1st August) the Programme Office and Millennium Support Teams will say farewell to our friend and colleague Stuart Ure, off to a new web design role in the medical industry.
Stuart has been an invaluable member of the eLGAR team ensuring the smooth operation of OPAC and constantly improving the functionality, look and feel of eLGAR's public interface.
It was Stuart’s online tutorial of the AirPac module that won eLGAR second prize in III's WebPac Be Innovative Awards this year. Stuart was part of the eLGAR team attending the 2008 IUG Conference where the prize was collected.
The eLGAR community is already feeling our loss with comments from the OPAC Team, Support and Systems Librarians around the region of regret to see Stu go.
We wish Stuart all the very best in his fabulous new job.

Pay online - coming soon to a website near you
Pay online is the latest eLGAR collaboration offering set to enhance our library service to customers from 1 June 2008.
The new OPAC feature will allow customers to make a credit card payment on any outstanding fines or charges within their My Info account. It is designed to be secure and offer a convenient and easy to use payment option.
Pay online is in the final testing stage and will be available before go-live for staff to explore how easy it is to use. Go-live for Manukau, Rodney, North Shore and Waitakere libraries is set for 1 June with Auckland to follow in conjunction with the re-launch of their website.
A how-to and FAQ’s guide will be circulated prior to go-live to assist all front-line staff. In addition a re-design of the My Info brochure promoting the new feature will be delivered to libraries in time for the public launch. A synchronised press release is also planned.
The launch will provide an occasion for staff to interact with customers and encourage them to make use of all the features offered in My Info. This is also an opportunity to ensure that customer contact details are up to date. Providing this new feature paves the way for libraries to offer other services such as Held Item Delivery.
Further updates will follow as we approach the launch date.
